The PROM
San Antonio’s Power of Preservation Foundation (PoP) announced the second Preservation Prom gala event is scheduled on Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the Inter-Continental Motors Building. The foundation, which raises money for local preservation programs, also announced that organization’s efforts raised $30,000 in the first year. In their second year, PoP plans a schedule of social and educational events, including a volunteer program in partnership with the foundation’s principal sponsor Glazer’s Distributing. With the announcement, the foundation is seeking additional sponsors for the 2013 Preservation Prom that will include a program to honor San Antonio preservation advocates and educators.

With the help of Glazer’s and all their other sponsors, the foundation’s inaugural fundraiser – the Preservation Prom – drew more than 300 attendees for an evening that included a speakeasy VIP party, 1920’s style dress and a ‘pachanga’ themed after-party. All proceeds – approximately $30,000 – from the event support the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) education and outreach programs, with a particular focus on those programs that directly accomplish the rehabilitation and reuse of historic properties.
The S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization) Project provides a proactive approach to arresting further deterioration of local historic districts as well as providing a hands‐on learning experience for students. Proceeds from the PROM will be used to build capacity of the program and expand its reach.
Raised funds will also support OHP’s “Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resale Revolving Fund “ and an “Owner‐Occupied Rehabilitation Loan Fund.”
Called a “Prom with a purpose,” PoP’s annual signature event occurs, for the second time, in unexpected, historic property. Last year’s gala, held in the decommissioned century-old Mission Road Power Plant was a partnership with owner CPS Energy to help showcase the building for future repurposing and renewal to take advantage of its history, location and nearby enhancements. Again this year, the foundation will work with the building owners for cleaning and minor improvements to host the party, demonstrating the property’s potential. Designed by San Antonio’s O’Neil Ford, the Inter-Continental Motors Building opened in 1963 as a Volkswagen and Porsche dealership. Called one of the world’s most beautiful car dealerships when it opened, the property today is, predominantly, unchanged from the original designed. On Broadway, bordering Brackenridge Park, the International-style building will inspire a mid-century theme for the Power of Preservation Prom.

Started in 2011, the Power of Preservation Foundation is a coalition of advocates, agencies and private businesses interested in preserving San Antonio’s history, heritage and built environment. In addition to support of preservation programs, PoP seeks to engage young professionals and students to become the next generation of preservationists.
